A bit about Tetbury’s history

Tetbury is a small Cotswolds town. The town has a population of just over 5000 people and is situated in Gloucestershire, close to the border with Wiltshire. Tetbury was founded in the early seventh century, making it one of the oldest towns in England. The name ‘Tetbury’ is thought to derive from the Old English for ‘timber fort’, due to the fact that the original settlement was built near a forest.

The town grew significantly in the medieval period, due largely to its wool trade. Tetbury became known as a ‘staple town’, meaning that it had the right to hold weekly markets and an annual fair. In 1685, the town was granted a charter to become a ‘market town’, giving it official status.

Why Tetbury is the perfect place to live

There are many reasons why Tetbury is the perfect place to live. Firstly, it is located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). This means that there are plenty of opportunities for walking, cycling and other outdoor activities right on your doorstep.

Secondly, Tetbury is home to a number of independent shops and cafes, as well as a twice-weekly market. This gives the town a unique and charming character. Saturdays in Tetbury are all about pottering in the many fascinating antiques shops whilst Sunday mornings are for ‘brunching’ at The Blue Zucchini.

Finally, Tetbury is within easy reach of  Bristol, Bath, Cheltenham, Cirencester and Swindon meaning that you can enjoy all the benefits of city life while still living in a peaceful and beautiful setting and there are plenty of options if you need to commute for work.

Family Life in Tetbury

One of the main reasons that Tetbury is such a popular place to live is its excellent schools. The town has two primary schools, both of which are rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted. Sir William Romney’s School is the town’s secondary school, and it too is rated ‘Good’.

There is also a highly-regarded independent school, Westonbirt School just 5 minutes drive away.

Tetbury has a wide range of great activities for kids to get involved in. There are excellent rugby and cricket clubs, Cubs and Brownies as well as a lively drama group. Plus the surrounding countryside is ideal for cycling, horse riding and walking the dog.

The Tetbury Property Market

Tetbury is currently one of the most sought-after locations in the Cotswolds. This is reflected in the property prices, which are some of the highest in the area. The average property in Tetbury currently costs around £475,000. But don’t worry, there are still some affordable options available if you know where to look.

We would always recommend contacting local estate agents to get an idea of what’s available in your price range. They will also be able to give you some advice on the best areas to look for property in Tetbury. Ask to put on their lists so that they can contact you as soon as a new property comes onto the market. With the area being so popular, it is often the case that a house can be sold before it appears on any property websites.
